Named after the fertile fields, the Town of Farmington, was settled in 1781. The settlers produced hay, apples, and wool for sale. Later years saw the building of carriage and cheese factories and saw mills that supported this thriving community. In 1864 the first public institution of higher education in Maine was established here. The University of Maine Farmington is considered one of the greatest colleges in America and is noted for it’s teacher education and human services programs.
Snowmobile trails here follow the Sandy River and wind around the farm fields with views of this historic town.
